Princess Days: Sleeping Beauty

Here follows an account of our family’s recreational habits. Two summers ago, we decided to have family “princess days.” 

Now even though there are 4 of us sisters, by no means are all of us super “girly girls.” This endeavor would not mean glittery hair, makeovers, fancy dresses, or even a trip to Disney World. 

No, each selected date would be dedicated to a specific Disney princess and would involve several specific elements:

• The watching of her movie
• The reading of the original tale (if any) before Disney redid it
• The honorary wearing of a certain color
• The reenacting of a scene from the movie
• The baking and/or eating of a somehow-related food (duh!)
• The taking of many pictures!

Now, here for your enjoyment, is the first installment of our family’s “princess days.” Hail to the Princess Aurora!

Sleeping Beauty’s original release date: January 29, 1959 – it’s “wondrous to see, glorious to hear!” (Note: the Disney version is very different from the original.)

The COLOR: pink vs. blue! And of course, we had to reenact the fairies’ constant debating!

The FOOD: Remember when the fairies are trying to prepare for Briar Rose’s birthday without using magic? One of them tries to bake a cake by following a recipe. “Hmmm… fold in the eggs?” So she gently places the eggs in the batter, folds the dough on top of the eggs, and grimaces as she hears them crack. (No eggshells were added in the making of this cake – posed for photo only!)

The ACTIVITY: sleeping, of course!

One gift, beauty rare, gold of sunshine in her hair,
Lips that shame the red, red rose, she'll walk in springtime wherever she goes!

The nightingale her troubadour, bringing his sweet serenade to her door.

One day he will come, riding over the dawn,
When you awaken to love's first kiss, till then, Sleeping Beauty, sleep on!

And being awakened with a kiss! (Thanks, lovely parents, for going along with our silly reenactments!)

Also, we did some dressing up. Three of us became the fairies: Flora, Fauna, & Merryweather. After all, they are pretty much what make the movie.

We wanted our youngest sister to be princess Aurora, because she’s 16 (or was at the time), blonde, and beautiful, but she opted to be Maleficent instead.
