Princess Days: Pocahontas

It's time for another family princess day! And what's "just around the river bend"?

It’s Pocahontas, of course! A rather weird, transcendental movie, but a musical Disney classic nonetheless.

Our family had a lot of fun with this one, despite all the inaccuracies between the title character and her historical namesake.

The film released on June 23, 1995, which was the four-hundredth anniversary of the real Pocahontas’ birth.

THE COLOR: brown (and earth tones)

Even our pets got into character – we had Misty play Meeko the raccoon, while Zeke pretended to be Flit the hummingbird, Pocahontas’ animal sidekicks!

THE FOOD: corn – “It’s gold and it’s mine! Mine! Mine!” (and look, the cherries are a tribute to Percy the dog – haha)

Here’s my dad planting a flag like those haughty colonists:

"It's glory, God and gold And The Virginia Company!"

THE ACTIVITY: nature photos!

My mother wears this Indian costume that every year for Thanksgiving!

We walked down to a nearby park and had a nature photoshoot, where we enjoyed being barefoot…

…conversing with “Grandmother Willow”…

“Listen with your heart - you will understand!”

…posing with trees…

…hugging trees…

…lying in the grass…

…and handling dirt.

"You can own the Earth and still,
All you'll own is Earth until
You can paint with all the colors of the wind!"

Speaking of which…

We used a fan to simulate one of the many times that Pocahontas' hair billowed out behind her, and look at those pink and orange leaves - just like the colors of the wind!

And just for fun, here are 15 interesting facts about Pocahontas.
